Rashida Tlaib Says Facial Recognition Technology Is Racist
“According to the Detroit News, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) visited Detroit’s ‘Real-Time Crime’ center, which uses cameras and computer software equipped with facial recognition technology placed on traffic lights, businesses and streets around the city.
Tlaib tweeted that Detroit ‘should probably rethink this whole facial recognition bulls**t’.
During the trip, Tlaib took umbrage with how many white people the police squad hired to monitor a city that is 80 percent black.
Tlaib told Craig, ‘Analysts need to be African Americans, not people that are not. I think non-African Americans think African Americans all look the same’.
Detroit Police Chief, James Craig (who is African-American) replied: ‘I trust people who are trained, regardless of race; regardless of gender. It’s about the training’.
Tlaib was asked whether that means non-whites should be barred from working as crime analysts in mostly white communities. She replied: ‘Look it up’.
Tlaib’s comment called ‘racist’ by Detroit police chief
Following the tour, Craig, an African-American, took issue with Tlaib’s comments. ‘We have a diverse group of crime analysts, and what she said — that non-whites should not work in that capacity because they think all black people look alike — is a slap in the face to all the men and women in the crime center’, Craig told the Detroit News.
He told CNN affiliate WDIV-TV on Wednesday: ‘The fact that she made that statement, what does that say to the members of this department, who are analysts, who are trained, who are white? That they, in some way, can’t do their job professionally? That’s insulting’.
Tlaib doubled down on her divisive and stupid comments:
On Twitter, Tlaib shared links to studies and media reports on the technology and its errors in identifying people of different races and genders.
‘The science suggests that people have difficulty identifying faces of people from other races (and) we must take it seriously’, Tlaib wrote on Twitter.
Comment: The idea that AI-based technology would be ‘racist’ is profoundly stupid. AI-based recognition couldn’t possibly include social biases unless they were explicitly programmed into the system.
In 2018 Tlaib won the Democratic nomination for the US House of Reps seat for Michigan’s 13th congressional district. She ran unopposed in the general election and became the first Palestinian-American woman in Congress, the first Muslim woman to serve in the Michigan legislature and, with Ilhan Omar (D-MN), one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress.
